Homage to the harp 27th and 28th July

 Homage to the harp!

Press release from the National Botanic Garden of Wales:

A two-day homage to the harp takes place at the National Botanic Garden of Wales on Saturday and Sunday, July 27 and 28.

The weekend-long celebration of the national instrument of Wales will feature talks, recitals and have-a-go, hands-on sessions for people of all abilities and all ages.

Organiser and harpist Shelley Fairplay said: ‘The weekend provides an excellent opportunity for people who have never played before to try the harp. There”s a workshop that includes demonstrations of pedal, celtic and lap harps and then a session where you can try your hand at playing a 17-string lap harp.’

The weekend features six workshops, a number of recitals by Shelley, a lecture and demonstration on the harp and its history, as well as a special trail of discovery for young “Harp Detective”s and a harp drawing competition.

Shelley will also be launching her brand new CD, entitled ‘The Cherished Harp’, which will be available for sale during the event. There is also a chance to win a 17-string lap harp, the prize in a competition running on Shelley”s Facebook page – visit

Event organiser David Hardy said: ‘Shelley is a regular performer at the Garden and very welcome sight – and sound.  She plays an alluring array of styles and genres, from classical through to show, film, jazz and pop.’

He added: ‘She has put together terrific two-day event which we hope to make a regular fixture in the Garden”s events calendar.’

There are two 45-minute workshops and one 15-minute “Tiny Hands-On” session (for children aged 2-6) per day. Anyone wanting to book a place on any of the workshops, should call 01558 667149. Good luck!

Try out some basic early tunes and techniques with this beautiful little knee harp! This can be used in a classroom setting, for music therapy or even just as an incredible ornament. For those of you already playing the harp this is a very portable little instrument for taking on holiday to keep your hand in on or for keeping beside your pedal harp at events ready for little children to try!

This is a 17 string/note diatonic instrument without levers so it is not suitable for beginners studying for exams or long term progression – but it is a great way to try out the instrument, technique and basic tunes! Whilst this is not a harp that will take you to the Albert Hall, it might just awaken the harpist within you!

2nd and 3rdprize: A copy of my new CD – releasing on the 27th of July 2013:

The Cherished Harp

Traditional tunes from around the British Isles

Arranged and Performed by harpist Shelley Fairplay

The draw will take place on the 28th July at the close of the National Botanic Garden of Wales “Homage to the Harp” Weekend.

Delivery of harp and CD”s covered to UK mainland only.

Summer Weddings 2013!

Well here we are in June and it finally feels like summer is here! I am a happy harpist indeed!

Harpist at Vale Hotel

May and June have been particularly busy playing the harp for happy couples wedding day”s across South Wales. I have been providing the musical backdrop for wedding day”s in Newport, Swansea, Cheshire, Cardiff, Brecon, Gloucester and even Dublin! Venues have included Miskin Manor, Vale Hotel, the Roman Baths in Bath, Peckforton Castle, St Fagans Castel, Cardiff Castle, City Hall Cardiff, Winkworth Farm and Manor Parc to name a few.

Recording Harp Music

It was wonderful to be invited back for the third year in a row to be the harpist for the Amlin Cup Final/Heineken Cup Final weekend and this year it meant a little adventure over to Dublin. The harp was so close to the Heineken Cup I was worried I might somehow knock it over all ok though!

Also worked on some harp recordings up in Mid Wales with so hopefully some new sound clips up on the website soon!#

Harp Evening Class Cardiff

Ensemble for Adult Learners: Launching September 2013

Monday night 10 week class each school term.

In September 2013 I am launching a harp ensemble evening class for adult learners. The ensemble will run in 10 week blocks in conjunction with the school terms. Each week we will work on repertoire pieces from traditional, classical, world and modern genres as an ensemble and also look at one specific skill/technique to inform your general harp playing.

Are you studying the harp?

Come and join us! The classes are open to all harp students who have a basic knowledge of music reading and harp technique. Music will be prepared to cater for a variety of abilities to make sure everyone can participate and progress appropriately within their comfort zone.

Q: What are the benefits of learning and playing in an ensemble?

A: You will have the opportunity to hear and try new repertoire, bench mark your progress, explore different techniques, share successes, overcome challenges, the list is endless! You will also find that ensemble playing works wonders for sight-reading skills.

Q: Will you need to bring your own harp and equipment?

A: So that we can play as an ensemble you will need to bring your own harp on a weekly basis. A benefit to this will be that if you have any tunings, string or other maintenance questions I will be able to help or offer advice as required. Adjacent parking to the venue is available along with good access to the rehearsal space. I will provide all the music for our sessions and you will need to bring the handouts from previous weeks.

‘Thank you so much for the ensemble workshop, as always I learned loads and it was great meeting other people who are also studying the harp’ – Julia

Are you interested?

I would be delighted to hear from you! For futher information and to register your interest please email me via: I hope to see you in September if not before!
