Dynamic Harps – Open House

Harp Ensemble Workshops for all – Autumn 2019

I am excited to be offering a new opportunity for harpists to ‘come and try’ Dynamic Harps during themed workshops I will be running in autumn 2019. Dynamic Harps usually runs to 10 week terms with one more concerts, this can be a big commitment, although worth it I promise! If you think you would like to come and try a session or two with us before taking the leap to join in January then this is the opportunity for you!

There will be 3 workshops held over the Autumn term, open to all ages and abilities, members or non – members of the regular ensembles.

You can book just one session, or as many as you can make! Please note the Christmas session has slightly different times to the other three, as that workshop will finish with a little party and an ‘open mic’ opportunity for harpists to play Christmas music to each other.

All workshops will take place in the Old Church Rooms, Park Rd, Radyr CF15 8DF.

The dates and content of workshops are as follows:

Sunday 6th October 2019 ‘Metronome Magic!’

11.30am to 4.30pm

Workshop fee £30.00

As a musician, whatever your level, the metronome is your best friend. Does this ring true to you or do you just secretly sometimes feel like you would like to chuck it out of a window?! During this session we will discuss how you can learn to work well with your metronome using exercise and techniques that will over time help you improve on your flow, agility and speed. Basically I will try to really show you why teachers endlessly go on about how great they are!

We will also work together on some lovely ensemble pieces, they will include passages that would benefit from metronome practice so we can look at these using some of the techniques and exercises I will give out on the day.

Sunday 3rd November 2019  ‘You can do it!’

11.30am to 4.30pm

Workshop fee £30.00

Dynamic HarpsWorking alongside your teacher on a brand new piece is always an exciting moment. What will it sound like? Will you find it easy? Will you find it challenging? Will you like it? As teachers we aim to demystify a piece for you to make it as easy and enjoyable to learn as possible by breaking it down into understandable and achievable blocks, showing you patterns, helping you create exercises for tricky bits and keeping a look out for all the markings on the music.

Sometimes as as student you just desperately want to work on something new before that lesson, or simply learn something in your own time. What do you do then to avoid leaning rhythms or notes incorrectly, or to avoid overwhelm?

I am a great believer in creating cheat sheets for practice and also making what in START HARP I call ‘Everyday Exercises’. I will discuss ways you can break pieces down yourself to demystify them and create easier ways to approach and practice a new piece. During this session I will also go over some foundation technique reminders to help keep us all on the straight and narrow!

We will work on playing pieces together using this approach over the course of the workshop day.

Sunday 8th December 2019 ‘Sparkle this Christmas!’

2.30pm to 6.30pm – From 5.30pm onwards we will have a little Christmas party together with opportunities for all to play background music while we eat, drink and be merry! You can bring family and friends to the 5.30pm party, just let me know how many will attend so I can have enough mince pieces!

Workshop fee £20.00 / FREE to regular Dynamic Harps Members

During this workshop afternoon I will share with you some really ‘quick fix’ ways you can make your Christmas music sparkle this year (basically a few nice tricks to make a regular arrangement sound more fun) and we will also play some ensemble and duet arrangements of well loved Christmas music to help get us into the wonderful christmas sprit! (Ohhhh I cannot wait, did I mention, I love Christmas!)

We will then take a break and finish the session with a little Christmas ‘party’ where we can play to each other (anyone who wants to), perhaps sing a carol or two and also enjoy a mulled wine and mince pie! You are also most welcome to invite your friends and family along to join us at 5.30pm, just let me know how many of you are coming before the day please!

You can sign up to each course on this page, please ‘add to basket’ for each workshop you would like to take and then checkout.

What is Dynamic Harps?

Dynamic Harps is a community based ensemble in Cardiff, Wales, where the harp is the National Instrument.  The membership ranges from harp novices to students of a grade 7 level, with children through to post retirement performing together in the group. The ensemble is run by the passionate and dedicated harpist and teacher Shelley Fairplay: www.harpwales.com.

Dynamic Harps are a supportive and dedicated group of fellow harp enthusiasts who meet weekly to play a diverse range of musical genres together; traditional, classical, pop, rock, show tunes, film music, Jazz and more. Songs are requested by the members and arranged by our director for us to perform.

Some of our favorite places to perform have been the Norwegian Church in Cardiff Bay, the National Waterfront Museum in Swansea, and Churches in our local area.

Her 2016 concert series “HarpOSphere” features her own original works along with her arrangements of popular, classic and traditional tunes. She has performed throughout the UK, and appeared in Europe and the U.S. as a soloist and alongside internationally renowned harpists including electric jazz harpist Deborah Henson-Conant. Her Dynamic Harps Ensemble, features both an adult and children’s group, filled with harpists who enjoy learning and performing music from films, pop, shows, classical, Jazz and Celtic genres. 2016 has seen the launch of her brand new online harp course for beginner harpists, START HARP.
